This week on the podcast we geek out to final Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer. We take a look at some of the records the trailer broke and how Disney is using the trailer debut to attract a new old audience to Star Wars. We take a quick look at some of the lingering questions the final trailer answered and how that fictional tie-in to Nazi Germany took on a literal meaning this week. Plus Disney starts its own streaming service called DisneyLife. What does that mean for Netflix? For the week of October 26 this is Episode 49 of The Disney Movie Review.

And prices on annual passes went up at Disney parks and there is one ultimate test to decide whether Disney is still worth it.

This week I interview Disney Biographer Dr. Steven Watts - one of the historians featured in the recent PBS Documentary Walt Disney: American Experience. I ask him what the documentary got right and wrong, whether he was racist against different groups of people, One thing Walt Disney did that made him so successful.

Visit www.TheDisneyMovieReview.com/45 for the show notes this week.

In this episode, we ask Dr. Watts:

  1. What did he think of the documentary?
  2. What was it like to do research in the Disney archives?
  3. How did Walt see what others could not see?
  4. What are the human parts of Walt Disney that we often do not see?
  5. Was Disney racist between certain groups?
  6. In the documentary Dr. Watts said Disney didn’t think through the problems of the Depression. What did he mean by that?
  7. Would Walt Disney have been able to be Walt Disney without Roy as his brother?
  8. What about Elias? How do we wrap around such a controversial figure?
  9. Walt was very intent on the studio being named after him. Did that cause conflict?
  10. Do you you believe in the idea of a Disney Renaissance?
  11. what does it take to make history?

This week a new study says audiences are more excited for the Hunger Games than Star Wars. There are probably two reasons why. Disney invests in a virtual reality company to help them sell jeans to miners. It's explained in the podcast. Netflix says they want to be the next Disney and they are going after China to prove it.

This week Disney released a new trailer for The Jungle Book, but don’t worry. Disney won’t screw up the canon this time. PBS puts out a 2-night documentary on Walt Disney to mixed reviews. Why no one really knows whether it’s good or bad. Disney announced some Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious news and it's probably too late to stop it. And a VERY special guest stops by to talk about Cinderella’s DVD release.

And even though it has nothing to do with Disney movies we talk about the new Jungle Cruise breakfast at Disneyland. That and much, much more. This week on episode 29 of The Disney Movie Review, Pixar releases its first full-length trailer for The Good Dinosaur, but the trailer has no dialogue. That’s not an accident and we’ll tell you why. Ant-Man opened with more than $58 Million last weekend beating Universal Pictures’ Minions. We look into the formula Marvel used to beat Minions. GQ magazine pranks Lucasfilm and there is nothing they can do about it. ESPN is in a lot of financial trouble and I am one big reason why. That and much, much more.
