This week it's our spoiler review of Cars 3. Check out the show notes on www.TheDisneyMovieReview.com/136
This week Marvel and Pixar release trailers for Black Panther and Coco and I’m excited and nervous. A leak of details around Star Wars: The Last Jedi appeared online recently and we are pretty sure it is fake. Disney fights against the unauthorized censorship and distribution of its movies, even though the service may technically be legal. And we announce the winner of our first contest to win the Disney movie of your choice! That and much, much more! For the week of June 12, 2017, this is Episode 135 of The Disney Movie Review.

As promised, here is the rest of the conversation on Pandora: The World of Avatar. We'll revisit the discussion once we get a chance to visit the world.
This week Bob Iger resigned from Donald Trump’s Advisory Council. We talked about what’s changed and whether this move could hurt Disney. Pirates of the Caribbean pushes Disney past $3 billion at the global box office, but were critics too harsh on the movie, and attendance was down at all of the Disney parks in 2016...what this means for your summer vacation. That, and much, much more. For the week of June 3, 2017, this is Episode 134 of The Disney Movie Review.

This week Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales makes its debut in movie theaters. We talk about whether Johnny Depp’s off-screen troubles affected his on-screen performance and where this film ranks in the Pirates franchise. Plus, we discuss why we will almost certainly see another Pirates film, even though Disney said this was their last. That and much more. This week Pixar released another trailer for Cars 3 and it looks like Rocky. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 did really well, but it still might fail and maybe that’s a good thing. Then we talk about Pirates of the Caribbean and how it's providing Disney with big trouble and a not so little China. Also, Disney released its financial results for its second fiscal quarter. Plus we talk about Happily Ever After, that new nighttime fireworks show at Disney World. Finally, we also launch a contest that could add a new Disney movie to your collection. All that and Much, Much, more! For the week of May 15, this is Episode 131 of The Disney Movie Review.

This week it’s our spoiler review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. We talk about where this fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline. Also, was there too much adult humor for a Guardians movie? And what can Avengers: Infinity War learn from this movie? Plus, we talk about the best use of music.
For the week of May 8, 2017, this is Episode 130 of The Disney Movie Review.
* I erroneously said the sixth Infinity Stone was omnipotence. In fact, it is Reality. My deepest apologies.
This Week Cars 3 gets a full trailer and it looks like a return to form for the Franchise. Disney releases its entire slate of films through 2021 and refuses to name some movies that really should have names. Plus we talk Born in China and how Beauty and the Beast beat Star Wars…That and much much, more. For the Week of May 1, this is Episode 129 of The Disney Movie Review
Sorry for the long intro this week, but I wanted to let you know that I will be accepting advertisers for the show. (If you listen to the show and want to promote your business, you’ll be able to buy time for a discount!). That being said, I can promise you three things. 1.) I will always let you know when I am promoting an ad. 2.) I will do my best to use the money to improve the show. 3.) I will do my best to not waste your time.
CARS 3 Trailer
Pixar released the first full trailer for Cars 3 this week. Take a look at the trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LeOH9AGJQM). This appears to be a return to form for the franchise. It is apparent that it is following the “redemption story” format a little closer than the second one did. Owen Wilson is returning as Lightning McQueen and we get our first real look at Cristela Alonzo as Cruz Ramirez. This trailer also confirms that Larry the Cable Guy will be back to voice Tow Mater. Ed brought up a good point that it is rather late in the season for us to get our first real trailer for Cars 3, since the release is slated for June 16. That said, I personally don’t have a huge need to see more of this film. I just hope it is better than Cars 2.
Walt Disney Studios Release Calendar
Disney released its movie calendar through 2021, instantly causing a lot of speculation from fans. You can see the full slate thanks to Deadline.com here(https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/disney-release-calendar-wm.pdf). It’s interesting to note that Disney stayed away from any December releases in 2020. That is when Jame Cameron’s sequel to Avatar - a.k.a. The biggest movie of all time - is expected to drop. I don’t think Disney is necessarily afraid of Cameron as much as they are working to protect and advertise for the World of Pandora in Animal Kingdom. It doesn’t make sense to undercut the parks side of the business just to prove how popular Star Wars or Marvel is.
It’s also interesting to note that Disney did not name the Avengers film nor the DisneyToon Studios film in 2019. We’ve known both of these movies are coming since 2015, so they aren’t a surprise. I suppose they might be waiting to do a big reveal at D23 in July, but it seems a little odd. This is especially true for the Avengers film, which we know is part 2 of Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe they just have a snazzy title for it.
Finally, we have a release date for Frozen 2!! November 27, 2019, Anna, Elsa, and the whole gang will be back for another adventure in Arendell. I can’t lie, I’m excited for this one. There is a reason Frozen took the world by storm and I still count it in my top 5 of Disney’s animated films. I’m not sure it will recapture the magic of the first one, but if it even comes close it will be something I can’t let go.
The full slate can be found at the end of this article.
BORN IN CHINA REVIEW
I haven’t seen Born in China yet, but Ed gives a great review on the show and on his site, DisneyMovieDatabase.com. (https://www.disneymoviedatabase.com/copy-of-monkey-kingdom) Overall he gave it an 8 out of 10, saying that the movie is “looks magnificent” with compelling writing. The producers spent more than one year making the film and went through a lot of pain to capture footage we’ve never seen before. For example, this is the first time you will ever see Snow Leopard cubs in the wild on camera. DisneyNature caught that . Read more about what it took to make the movie here. Disney’s stock is approaching its all-time high of $120/share. This update comes despite massive layoffs at ESPN. Kristin had some great thoughts about this that she sent in to the show.
Black Panther has wrapped shooting and we are anxiously awaiting its February 2018 Release.

The Live-action Beauty and the Beast knocked Star Wars: A New Hope out of Top 10 Domestic films of all time. Beauty earned $471 million domestically, which beats the $460.9 million earned by Star Wars. That said, when adjusted for inflation the original Star Wars has earned $1.5 billion domestically.

Mark Hammill came out this week saying he originally hated the script for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. " “When I read [episode] eight I told Rian, ‘I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you’ve decided about my character’," He said in an interview. "But it might be a good sign! Because I was really wrong about [episode] seven]."
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned more than $6 million in its first day overseas. That's actually a lot of money.

This week we took a look at Disney’s slate of remakes. Ever since Alice in Wonderland raked in more than $1 billion worldwide, it seems like the Disney live-action remake machine has gone into overdrive. With the recent success of Beauty and the Beast, we can expect even more. This week we look at the current slate and evaluate the good and the bad, and we have a healthy discussion about The Song of the South. Plus we recommend a few movies that Disney should consider remaking and which ones they should never, ever touch. That and much, much more. For the week of April 24, 2017, this is Episode 128 of The Disney Movie Review.
SCHEDULED REMAKES
Here is the current list of remakes that we know of: Dumbo, Mulan, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan, Tink, Cruella, Maleficent 2, Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book 2, Christopher Robin, and an Oliver Twist remake. See a full list here.
We all agreed that Disney is on the right track with a few of these movies, including Tink, Christopher Robin, and Sword in the Stone. Ed agreed that it would be nice to see an Aladdin remake, but only if James Monroe Iglehart would play the Genie. (Listen to our interview with the Tony-winning Actor here.)
I’d also like to see Disney try its hand at Atlantis. The movie doesn’t get a ton of love from Disney fans and I can’t figure out why. It’s very mystical with good voice acting and can be very Avatar-esq in a live action retelling. In fact, they could probably replace the world of Pandora in Florida with Atlantis if they wanted to.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, would also make a great remake. We already know a lot about Quasimodo, but I’d love to know more about Phoebus, Frollo and Esmerelda. There is also a potential to move forward in the story and tell us about what the society looks like after the acceptance of Quasimodo.
Ed thinks Disney should look at redoing The Rescuers. We talked about how The Rescuers Down Under became Disney’s first sequel in episode 92. It’d be awesome to see if Disney could translate the magic of those two movies to the big screen and maybe make a trilogy of these mice solving cases.
If we’d venture outside of the movies to talk about the parks, it’d be great to get a backstory on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Disney is already working on a live action version of The Jungle Cruise and The Pirates of the Caribbean was really the first movie that brought Disney into the live action remake territory.
Kingdom Keepers is another parks-based story that could easily translate to the big screen. There are several books in the series and they already have a following. This could give Disney it’s own “Harry Potter” type of movie series. I’m actually shocked that they haven’t started this yet.
Remakes Disney Should Never Do
We all agreed that Disney tends to get into trouble when they remake some of their more popular films that are recent. Even if they are popular at the box office, it tends to dilute the impact of the brand. That means we all agreed that The Little Mermaid should be off the table. It’s too recent and, unless they are doing a spinoff, it will be too closely compared to the original.
Cruella fell into this category for me. Glenn Close was so iconic in this role that I think it’d be difficult to duplicate that. Ed felt Fantasia needs an animated sequel before we start to look at a live action version. And since flying elephants in a live action form creep me out, Dumbo was simply out of the question. Kristin has no desire to see a Pinocchio, but probably because of Johnathan Taylor Thomas’ epic portrayal.
WHAT REMAKES SHOULD DISNEY NEVER TOUCH?
The truth is, we disagree on almost all of what remakes Disney should not touch. Ed isn’t opposed to remakes because he falls back on the originals. That said, he doesn’t like Snow White remakes. I’d want Disney to stay away from Lady and the Tramp, Oliver and Company, and The Emperor's New Groove. Kristin wants Disney to stay away from Pocahontas and Song of the South. Specifically, we discuss three films at length.
Pocahontas - Pocahontas is (in my opinion) one of the worst Princess movies. In fact, it is one of the lowest performing Princess films. Disney ran into a lot of controversy by trying to produce this story as an animated film. It’s one of the reasons Kristin feels like Disney should not touch this again.
I’d like to see Disney try to redo this film with a little more creativity. Now that the story of Pocahontas is widely available on the internet, I don’t think Disney has to try to change it so much. They can take the same strategy they did with Saving Mr. Banks. They didn’t tell the whole story, but they didn’t change it so that it was unrecognizable. It’d be great to get a “second draft” on that from Disney.
The Fox and the Hound - Disney probably couldn’t remake The Fox and the Hound after putting Zootopia forward. But it’s also a movie they probably shouldn’t remake either. The story rests on two different individuals whose differences drive them apart.
Song of the South - Kristin brought up that Song of the South should never be remade, which opened a can of worms. (Really, I opened it up). Kristin felt like the movie was too racially charged to be remade. I think the movie gets a bad rap from Disney fans. Ed brought up the book, Who’s Afraid of Song of the South. If you haven’t seen the movie, here is a link where I watched it. (http://watchcartoonsonline.eu/watch-song-of-the-south-1946-full-movie-online/)

This week, Lucasfilm Released the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Marvel released the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok and Disney Nature got in on the fun to release their Dolphins Trailer. We ask whether Disney Animation is paying enough attention to boys, Plus a lot of people are upset about a lingerie inspired by Disney Princesses. That and much much more. For the week of April 17, 2017 episode 127
WARNING: While we don’t mention anything explicit, we do talk about lingerie in this episode.
This week Lucasfilm released the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which you can see here). Ed, Cameron and Kristin felt like this was a pretty good look at the movie while I was the odd man out on this discussion. I think my expectations were a little high, given that The Force Awakens had its first teaser nearly 13 months before the release date. I was expecting a little bit more from this trailer and was a little disappointed.
However, we were all in agreement that the Thor: Ragnarok trailer knocked it out of the park. It was no surprise that this trailer broke Beauty and the Beast’s record, scoring more than 136 million views in just 24 hours. You can definitely see the humor floating through the trailer and it looks very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.
Last week on our “Seven questions of Disney” episode, we forgot to talk about Walt Disney Animation Studios. Today we catch up on that discussion and have a question submitted by Kim M. (I’m not even going to attempt to spell your last name cause I know I’ll get it wrong). Anyway, Kim wanted to know if we though Disney Animation was doing enough to attract young boys. Typically Disney Animation has let Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm shoulder the responsibility of reaching out to boys. Even in a movie like Wreck-It Ralph, it’s easy to feel that Vanelope is more important than Ralph. I’d be interested to see Disney Animation try a Prince movie. It would hav to make financial sense though. When DisneyToon Studios tried the Planes franchise aimed at boys, they couldn’t even make it through one trilogy. But, if at first you don’t succeed, try again.
Speaking of attracting male attention, a new line of Disney Princess-inspired Lingerie has set the Disney world on fire. The company Yandy is responsible for the line that is not officially licensed by Disney. Each set costs no more than $35/set. This prompted People Magazine to release an article about all the ways you can dress like a Disney Princess. (Read more on that here). Some people are outraged because they think the lingerie implies that someone is having adult thoughts towards a children’s cartoon character. Personally, I see it no different than having a pair of Mickey Socks or a Goofy tie. It’s just another way to express your love of a Disney. Either way, this is a great conversation that you should listen to.
In fact flicks:
Beauty and the Beast passed $1 Billion and Ed expects it to move past Alice in Wonderland soon.

This week, Disney is being sued over claims that it stole the idea, characters and dialogue for Zootopia. Also, a new streaming content competitor has popped up and it's led by a former Disney executive. Plus, Beauty and the Beast makes $500 million in 7 days, making it the sixth biggest seven-day movie opening of all time. That said, movie theaters are facing new pressure from studios to shorten the length between box office release and home video. And, oh yeah, Bob Iger's contract got extended through 2019. That and much, much more. For the week of March 27, 2017 this is episode 124 of The Disney Movie Review.

This week, Fans are mad that Thor: Ragnarok is going to be funny, but Director Taika Waititi is making it clear that he doesn’t really care. Someone thought it was a good idea to make a music video for Beauty and the Beast, but they were very wrong. Plus, Bob Iger quoted the musical Hamilton during the annual Shareholders meeting, so we made him a musical. That and much, much more. For the week of March 13, 2017 this is episode 122 of the Disney Movie Review.

This week is a jam-packed show as we try to catch up on two weeks of news! Does a gay LeFou really make sense for Beauty and the Beast? Disney marketing kicked into overdrive this week by releasing new trailers and footage for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Cars 3. Plus we found out that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is plural and a new article details how Disney is making fans of the Expanded Universe (a.k.a. Legends) happy. That and much much more. For the week of March 6, 2017, this is episode 121 of The Disney Movie Review.
